Information

The decision to buy a Bull Terrier should be given serious consideration and should be a decision which the whole family is 100% in favour of.  This is a lifetime commitment which will alter everyones life within the family.  Ensure that you contact reputable breeders and visit as a family before making your decision. Expect to be told all the horror stories that can come with owning a Terrier breed and the hard work which it requires to gain the perfect pet at the end.  This is a strong and powerful animal with a competitive instinct and although they do live in households with other pets they are not always tolerable of other animals.  They are extremely affectionate to people and are known for there fondness to children. They are a sensitive breed which do not kennel well or enjoy change within their regime.  They love nothing more than being the centre of your attention, and can be like a naughty toddler when that attention is not given, getting themselves into all sorts of mischief.

TRAINING

Bull terriers need a firm training regime and discipline, but usually the tone of your voice and a sharp NO are sufficient to get the point across.  It is inperrative that they know the pecking order within the household, and that the children in the house are higher in order than the bullie itself.  A lot of patience is required when training and there should be a consistancy of within the household with all family members contributing equaly.  They have a tendancy to turn a deaf ear when it suits and to be obstinate at times.   It is important to remember that the little cute loveable 8 week old puppy will soon become a fully grown dog.  At about 12 weeks old they start to show their true personalities and this is when serious training should begin.  A puppy which is not given enough attention will chew and can cause a lot of damage to the house and also to itself if it eats the wrong things.  This can lead to a blockage, then an operation and at times death.  They are an inquisitive breed and enjoy picking objects up in their mouths to see how it tastes, they should therefore be taught from an early age to leave things like childrens toys well alone.

Ensure that as a puppy your dog is touched all over its body on a regular basis and allows you to open its mouth to examine the teeth and look in the ears.   Ask friends and family to do the same as this will assist when visiting the vet and will help the dog not to have any fear of strangers.  Puppies should have lots of socialising with other animals, this can be done by joining your local training class or ring craft and walking with other well balanced dogs.  Attempt to walk your puppy for short walks once it has had all its injections and once it is comfortable on the lead ensure that you do not let it pull and it walks to heal.  Do not allow the puppy to jump up people at an early age as this is not acceptable when it is an adult dog.

As a puppy to assist with toilet training ensure that as soon as they wake and before bed time that they are put outside.  Never chastise a dog which has an accident within the house as this will only confuse, just ensure that this area is disinfected well to remove any odour, so that the puppy does not believe this is the correct place to use as the toilet.  Try to put in the same spot each time outside and it will eventually use that area to go to the toilet.  Do not allow your puppy the run of the house until it is reliable enough not to cause any damage.  Crates are useful when training to give the puppy a place to rest when tired and a secure enviroment for you to leave the puppy when you go out.

Ensure when out that this breed is always kept on a lead as this dog should always be under strict supervision in a public place.  If it does get off its lead do not chastise it on its return, however annoyed you may be.

Eventually after all your hard work you will have a excellent well balanced adult bull terrier, who will enjoy nothing more than sleeping the day away. You will find that as adult dogs they will fit into your regime and habits and all that they wish for is your companionship.

BUYING

If you decide that a bull terrier is the dog for your family ensure that you purchase from a reputable breeder.  Upon your visit to the breeder you should be allowed to meet all the family pets and in particular the mother of the pups.  You should expect to be assessed by the breeder and do not be offended if they feel that a bull terrier is not the correct pet for you.  All they are trying to do  is use  their experience to ensure no one ends up with alot of heartache if this breed is not correct for you as a family.
Before purchasing you need to decide whether you wish to buy a dog or a bitch, white or coloured and take into consideration the hereditary conditions that this breed can suffer from.

When collecting your puppy a reputable breeder should ensure that you are equipt with the following
1.A few days supply of food
2.KC documents
3.Training notes and diet sheet
4.Vaccination record
5.Help and support for the duration of the dogs life.
6.Information on Insurance

INSURANCE

The best advice you will ever be given is to insure you pet.  This breed can have the misfortune of getting themselves into sticky situations and even as a breeder with years of experience we have still had the unfortunate trip to the vets due to an obstruction or allergic reaction to something our dog has eat.  Even the smallest problems like a ripped due claw can give you a hefty vet bill.  We insure all our dogs with a well known reputable insurance and will give any advise on this if requested.

HEREDITARY DISEASES

Bull Terriers like all other pedigree breeds do suffer from hereditary diseases and below we have listed some of the main ones
